Adopt-A-Billfish Program

You just tagged and released a marlin, sailfish, or swordfish. Ever wonder where that billfish will go, what route it took to get there, and what its ultimate fate will be? So does the Adopt-A-Billfish program. Founded by Joan Vernon, the Adopt-a Billfish program researches the migratory patterns of the Pacific and Atlantic Coast of Central and South America by placing satellite tracking tags on fish. The tags record their position and depth every 10 minutes and can be programmed to last for one day or up to one year. Once the period is over, the tag harmlessly breaks free and floats to the surface of the ocean, where it links to a satellite that provides the information to computers where tracking results can be viewed. All donations made fund expeditions, migratory research and lobbying efforts toward countries in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean Sea to conserve billfish populations.

Adopt-A-Billfish has the undying support of several generous and concerned sponsors. Sperry Topsider, Yamaha Motors, The Yamaha Contender Miami Billfish Tournament, The Billfish Foundation, The International Game Fish Association, The Presidential Challenge Central America and The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have all made this program an ongoing success.
