The EDDIE® Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau

The Eddie stands as one of the most prestigious and respected events in the surfing world. Held at the iconic Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore, the contest isn’t just about surfing—it’s about honoring the legacy of a true Hawaiian hero and celebrating the immutable bond between humanity and the ocean. As a proud sponsor of the event, Costa shares this deep connection to the ocean embodying the same spirit of adventure, courage, and respect for the natural world that defines Eddie Aikau’s legacy. This is more than a competition; it’s a living testament to the values that Eddie stood for and a vibrant showcase of Hawaiian culture and the power of the waves.

The Legacy of Eddie Aikau and History of the Invitational

Eddie Aikau was more than a surfer; he was a symbol of courage, humility, and selflessness. As the first lifeguard stationed at Waimea Bay, Eddie saved hundreds of lives, braving treacherous waters to protect others. His reputation for charging massive waves with unmatched bravery earned him the respect of surfers worldwide, but it was his ultimate act of heroism during the 1978 Hōkūleʻa voyage that cemented his legacy. When the traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe capsized, Eddie paddled into the open ocean on his surfboard in search of help, sacrificing himself to save his crew. Although he never returned, his legacy endures, encapsulated in the iconic phrase, “Eddie Would Go,” a call to face challenges with unwavering determination and heart.

Founded in 1984 to honor Eddie’s memory, The EDDIE® Big Wave Invitational has become a beacon of excellence and respect within the surfing world. The event’s unique criteria—only running when waves reach a minimum of 20 feet Hawaiian scale (approximately 40-foot faces)—underscores its dedication to showcasing the most challenging and awe-inspiring conditions. Waimea Bay, steeped in history and home to some of the world’s most powerful waves, acts as the ultimate stage for his tribute.
